IAWRT gears up for third edition of International Women Film Festival to spotlight female directors

Kathmandu:

The International Association of Women in Radio and Television (IAWRT) is set to host the third edition of the International Women Film Festival on November 25, aiming to foster and celebrate the work of women film directors. IAWRT, serving as the umbrella organization for female journalists in both national and international radio and television media, plays a pivotal role in promoting gender inclusivity within the media industry.

Sangeeta Shrestha, the Festival Director, emphasized the significance of encouraging women filmmakers, stating, “We have capable women film directors who can promote the cinema sector worldwide through their creative output. However, the presence of women directors is not much in this sector due to the social outlook, less priority given to this sector, and the lack of opportunities and motivation. Festivals like this can be useful as well as an opportunity for them.”

IAWRT Nepal Chapter President Ichchhya Gurung announced that preparations for the festival have reached their final stages. The festival will take place at the meeting hall of the Nepal Film Development Board, showcasing films directed by women directors from Nepal and various other countries.

In addition to screening films, the festival will also feature an award ceremony for the winners of the Nepali short film competition, further recognizing and encouraging local talent in the filmmaking industry. As the event draws near, anticipation is building for a celebration of women’s contributions to the world of cinema and a platform to address the challenges that female directors often face.
