Kathmandu: Krishna Bahadur Mahara, Vice-Chairperson of CPN (Maoist Centre) and former Speaker, was released today amidst allegations related to a gold smuggling case. Released under the condition of his presence when required, Mahara was freed after the Central Investigation Bureau of the Nepal Police and District Public Prosecutor’s Office in Kathmandu completed recording his statement.
Mahara’s release comes after being initially arrested in Kapilvastu and brought to Kathmandu on March 18. The investigation into Mahara’s alleged involvement in the gold smuggling scandal began following a recommendation by a commission led by former justice Dilli Raj Acharya.
Underlining the complexity of the case, Mahara’s release on the guarantee of his son, Nirmal Mahara, reflects ongoing developments in the investigation. Further updates are anticipated as the case progresses.
