Kathmandu: In a groundbreaking development, the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras has commenced in Thamel, the bustling tourist epicenter of Kathmandu. The initiative is spearheaded by the Thamel Tourism Development Council, in collaboration with the support of Kathmandu Metropolitan City and Kathmandu Valley Police Office, Ranipokhari.
Council Chairperson Bhabishwor Sharma revealed that the strategic placement of CCTV cameras aims to elevate Thamel into a cleaner, more beautiful, safer, and well-organized locale, fortifying peace and security in the area.
A total of 80 CCTV cameras have already been strategically positioned along key thoroughfares such as Lainchaur Marg, Chhetrapati Marg, Nursing Chowk Marg, Chaksibari Marg, Satghumti Marg, JP Line Marg, and Paryatan Marg within the Thamel precinct.
Chairperson Sharma emphasized an ongoing effort to install a total of 112 CCTV cameras, including four larger units, with 80 cameras already operational. Prior to the installation, a collaborative study conducted by representatives from Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Kathmandu Valley Police Office, and Thamel Tourism Development Council identified the optimal locations for the CCTV cameras.
Council Vice-Chair Sahadev Dhamala underscored the potential of CCTV cameras in curbing criminal activities within the Thamel area. With over 2,000 landlords and businessmen associated with the Council, established in 2047 BS for Thamel’s development, the comprehensive CCTV installation represents a united front to foster a secure and thriving community.
