Kathmandu: Sugarcane farmers of Sarlahi have started Kathmandu-centric agitation. They have been staging a sit-in at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu since Sunday saying that the government’s promise to recover their due payment from the sugar mill operators has not been fulfilled. They have demanded the implementation of the agreement reached last year.

According to the Sugarcane Farmers’ Struggle Committee, Sarlahi, no progress has been made in the last one year even though the government has promised to collect the due payment within the one of the agreement.

The farmers are preparing to hold a peaceful sit-in at Maitighar Mandal under the program of the Kathmandu-centric movement and express their grievances to the civil society, media personnel and human rights activists.

According to government data, farmers are still have to receive more than Rs 520 million in arrears with sugarcane mills.

Accordingly, Shri Ram Sugar Mill has to pay Rs 260 million, Indira Sugar Mill Rs 47 million, Lumbini Sugar Mill Rs 84.1 million, and Annapurna Sugar Mill Rs 170 million.
