Kathmandu: Today, the 71st International Sagarmatha (Mt Everest) Day is being celebrated with fervor, marked by a series of events and programs. This day holds significant historical importance as it commemorates the monumental achievement of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Edmund Hillary, who successfully summited the world’s highest peak, Sagarmatha (Mt Everest), on May 29, 1953.
Initially established by the government in 2008, the International Sagarmatha Day has become a global observance, honoring the spirit of mountaineering and the awe-inspiring magnificence of Everest.
In Kathmandu, the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) led a spirited morning rally, attended by representatives from various tourism-related organizations. Banners and placards adorned with slogans, including this year’s prominent message – ‘World’s Highest Peak-Sagarmatha, Identity and Pride of Nepal,’ filled the streets as participants rallied in solidarity.
Notably, Minister for Finance Barshaman Pun, in his recent budget speech to the Federal Parliament, pledged to officially recognize and celebrate the International Sagarmatha Day annually. Furthermore, he announced plans to honor both national and international individuals and organizations contributing significantly to mountain tourism during these celebrations.
