Kathmandu: Senior Nepali Congress leader Ramchandra Poudel has been elected as a new president of Nepal.
Paudel was elected as the President after defeating CPN-UML candidate Subas Nemwang in the election held on Thursday.
As the term of President Bidhya Devi Bhandari is coming to an end, the election for the new President was held today.
While Poudel received 33,802 votes, his competitor Nemwang received 15,518 votes.
The total number of votes of the MPs who participated in the election process was 49,591.
Poudel has become the third president of the Republic of Nepal.
Paudel, who was born in Tanahun has been involved in the democratic movement for six decades from the Nepali Congress Party.
He has become an MP six times, a minister five times and the speaker of the House of Representatives once.
