Severe rainfall triggers widespread disasters across Nepal, claiming 204 lives

Kathmandu: A series of disaster incidents triggered by persistent rainfall across Nepal has resulted in at least 204 fatalities in the past five days. The relentless downpour has also left 89 individuals injured and 33 reported missing.

According to the Armed Police Force (APF), as of 3:15 PM on Monday, the Kathmandu Valley has suffered significant losses, with 82 deaths recorded, 17 injuries, and 20 individuals missing since the rain began Thursday evening. Among the deceased in the valley, 52 were from Kathmandu, 25 from Lalitpur, and five from Bhaktapur.

Bagmati Province has been hit hardest, with 176 casualties reported. In addition to the fatalities, 74 people were injured and 25 remain unaccounted for. Koshi Province also experienced tragedy, with 23 deaths, seven injuries, and 11 missing. Madhesh Province reported three deaths and four injuries, while Lumbini Province recorded two fatalities.

The severe weather has caused significant destruction, with a total of 1,783 housing structures damaged nationwide. Bagmati Province accounted for the most significant losses, with 1,023 homes destroyed, followed by Koshi Province with 690 and Madhesh Province with 70. Furthermore, several construction vehicles, including three tipper trucks and two excavators, were swept away by the swollen Trishuli River and have yet to be recovered.

It has been reported that rescue efforts have successfully evacuated 3,401 individuals to safer locations. Of those rescued, 1,902 were in the Kathmandu Valley, 890 in other districts of Bagmati Province, 526 in Koshi Province, and 83 in Madhesh Province.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as recovery efforts and assessments are underway in the affected regions.
