Protests in LA ease after 3 days of unrest amid immigration raids

Kathmandu: Protests against immigration raids in Los Angeles have calmed overnight following three days of unrest, with Mayor Karen Bass urging demonstrators to avoid “violence and chaos,” BBC reports.

The demonstrations, primarily concentrated in downtown LA, saw vehicles set on fire and a British photographer seriously injured after being hit by a sponge bullet. Despite the earlier turmoil, Sunday night appeared quieter, according to correspondent Peter Bowes.

The unrest has provided US President Donald Trump an opportunity to act on his pledge to use presidential powers to combat what he calls left-wing lawlessness. Trump has already deployed the National Guard to Los Angeles, despite opposition from California Governor Gavin Newsom.
