Kathmandu: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli honored the national women’s volleyball team, including players, coaches, and staff, at a ceremony held today at his official residence in Baluwatar. The awards recognize their achievements in the CAVA Women’s Volleyball National League.
During the program, PM Oli distributed prizes to 14 members of the team, including captain Aruna Shahi, chief coach Jagadish Prasad Bhatta, assistant coach Bharat Yadav, manager Nilam Singh Bajracharya, and physiotherapist Lokendra Kunwar. Each player received Rs 300,000, while the chief coach was awarded Rs 200,000, and the assistant coach, manager, and physiotherapist each received Rs 120,000.
The Nepali team achieved the first runner-up position in the league held in Kathmandu from August 1-7. A cabinet meeting on August 15 had approved a total prize amount of Rs 4.76 million for the team.
PM Oli praised the players’ success and encouraged them to strive for even greater achievements. He assured support from the government in providing a conducive environment for regular practice and improving sports infrastructure. He also reiterated his commitment to upgrade the Kirtipur Playground and prepare for the 10th National Games.
Minister for Youth and Sports, Tejulal Chaudhary, acknowledged the efforts that have elevated women’s volleyball in Nepal and emphasized the need for the government to prioritize sports in its policies. Secretary of the Ministry, Sumanraj Aryal, commended the team’s performance despite limited resources. National Sports Council member-secretary Tankalal Ghishing recognized the government’s role in advancing sports.
Nepal Volleyball Association General Secretary Roshan Shrestha expressed hope for a new covered hall in line with the Prime Minister’s promises. Captain Aruna Shahi stated that the award serves as motivation for the team to continue enhancing Nepal’s sports identity.
