Person accused in human trafficking case arrested after 14 years

Kathmandu: Bara police have arrested a fugitive accused in a human trafficking case after 14 years.

Jagdish Das, a resident of Bara, has been arrested. According to the police, the bus coming from Kathmandu was stopped by four persons including a slave at Karaiya Bridge on December 7, 2006. They had taken under control Tara Kumar Khatri, a resident of Madhyapur Thimi Municipality-15 of Bhaktapur district and looted cash, mobile phone and watch.

They demanded ransom by taking Khatri hostage in a slave’s house. Khatri had lodged a complaint at the District Police Office, Bara against four persons, including a slave, for threatening to sell them in India if they did not pay the ransom.

Das was arrested from Karaiyamai Rural Municipality-8 on Friday morning and necessary investigation has been started. As per the Bara District Police Office, an investigation has been started against him under the Human Trafficking and Smuggling (Control) Act with the permission of Bara District Court.

Although the main accused Das was arrested, the other three are absconding. Police said that they were searching for the other absconding accused.
