Kathmandu: Bindeshwari Shah, Nepal’s first female ambassador, has passed away at the age of 91. Her family confirmed the news of her death earlier this morning.
Born in 1933 in India, Shah pursued her higher education in the United States. She graduated from Barnard College and Columbia University, and later completed a master’s degree in international affairs from Johns Hopkins University.
In 1988, Shah made history by becoming Nepal’s ambassador to India, a role she took on at a time when no Nepali woman had ever held such a prominent diplomatic position.
Shah is survived by her two sons, Anil Kesari Shah and Ujjwal Kesari Shah.
