Nepal pledges strong commitment to global peacekeeping

Kathmandu: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defense, Purna Bahadur Khadka, conveyed Nepal’s unwavering commitment to playing a pivotal role in global peacekeeping efforts during the United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial held in Accra, Ghana.

Deputy Prime Minister Khadka made the pledge during discussions at the conference, which brought together key stakeholders from around the world. The UN-hosted event provided a platform for nations to reaffirm their dedication to international peacekeeping initiatives.

During the proceedings, Deputy Prime Minister Khadka received a courtesy call from Under Secretary General for UN Operational Support, Atul Khare, on Tuesday. The private secretariat of DPM Khadka reported that Khare commended Nepal for its significant contributions to international peacekeeping endeavors.

Highlighting Nepal’s commitment to the UN Environment Policy, Deputy Prime Minister Khadka outlined plans for the development of the Birendra Peace Operations Training Center (BPOTC) as the world’s first carbon-neutral training center. He expressed gratitude to the United Nations for its support in this ambitious initiative.

Deputy Secretary General of the UN Peace Operation, Jean Pierre Lacroix, also met with Deputy Prime Minister Khadka during the conference. Lacroix expressed confidence in Nepal’s potential to assume higher responsibilities in future peacekeeping missions and at UN headquarters, acknowledging the nation’s substantial contributions.

Deputy Prime Minister Khadka took the opportunity to recall the recent visit of the UN Secretary General to Nepal. He emphasized Nepal’s commitment to addressing pressing environmental challenges, such as melting icebergs, a concern that has been actively raised by the country at the ongoing COP-28 in Dubai.

Additionally, Ghana’s Minister for Defense, Dominic Nitiwul, paid a courtesy call on Deputy Prime Minister Khadka, commending Nepal for its high-level participation in the ministerial conference. The diplomatic exchanges underscored Nepal’s proactive role in international peacekeeping efforts and its commitment to addressing global challenges.
