Kathmandu: Nearly 1,000 people were arrested on Sunday in a sweeping immigration crackdown as part of US President Donald Trump’s push for mass deportations.

The raids targeted sanctuary cities, with Chicago being a key focus. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) also conducted operations in Miami and parts of New Jersey, escalating enforcement efforts.

Tensions over immigration extended to US-Colombia relations after two US military flights carrying deported migrants were initially denied landing rights by Colombian authorities. In response, the Trump administration threatened tariffs on Colombian exports to the US. Following the threat, Colombia reversed its decision and allowed the planes to land.

The mass deportation campaign has drawn sharp criticism from immigration advocates and heightened tensions with international partners.
