Gurung community celebrates Tamu Lhosar as New Year across the country

Kathmandu: The Gurung community is celebrating Tamu Lhosar as their New Year today, with various programs being held across the country, including the capital city.

The Tamu Lhosar Main Organizing Committee has organized a grand celebration at Tundikhel, Kathmandu, where cultural performances and traditional rituals are being showcased to mark the occasion.

Tamu Lhosar is deeply rooted in the Gurung community’s traditions and is linked to the movement of the sun. According to legend, this festival is celebrated annually on Poush 15 of the Nepali calendar, as the sun’s rays first warm Gurung-dominated regions such as Lamjung, Gorkha, Tanahun, Syangja, Manang, Kaski, and Parbat.

The festival also connects to similar celebrations by other Himalayan communities. As the sun’s warmth gradually reaches areas inhabited by the Tamang and Sherpa communities, they observe their respective Lhosar festivals in January and February.
