Government to take over operations of four child correction centers from NGO

Kathmandu: The Government of Nepal has decided to take over the operation of four child correction homes previously managed by the NGO, Youth Service Centre (USEP), starting from the current fiscal year.

Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens, Nawal Kishor Sah Sudi, announced the decision during a press conference held at the ministry on Wednesday. The facilities affected by this transition are located in Bhaktapur, Kaski, Morang, and Banke districts.

Minister Sudi stated that the move is part of the government’s broader plan to bring such sensitive child protection services under direct state supervision. He also highlighted the recent approval of the Special Protection Directive 2082, aimed at supporting the ongoing campaign to make Nepal free of street children.

Providing a summary of the ministry’s achievements over the past year, Minister Sudi said that Nepal is now in the final stage of declaring itself a country free of street children.

According to ministry data, a total of 71 children found in different parts of India were repatriated to Nepal in the past year. Additionally, 591 at-risk children were rescued and placed under protective care during the same period.
