Former President Bhandari bounce back to active politics

Kathmandu: Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has formally re-entered active politics by renewing her membership of the CPN-UML, sparking widespread criticism over ethical and constitutional implications.

Addressing a program on Saturday organized by the Madan Bhandari Foundation, Bhandari confirmed her return, breaking with the democratic norm that former heads of state should remain politically neutral.

Experts have warned that Bhandari’s move undermines the dignity and neutrality of the presidency. While not unconstitutional, constitutional expert Dr. Bhimarjun Acharya argued it violates the spirit of the constitution.

Political analysts, including Chandra Dev Bhatta and Dr. Nischal Nath Pandey, criticized the move for setting a dangerous precedent, blocking intergenerational leadership, and damaging the political culture of restraint.

Speculation is rife that Bhandari may be eyeing a leadership role within UML, with reports of a recent meeting with Prime Minister KP Oli fueling such rumors.
