Kathmandu: Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away today at the age of 92 after battling age-related medical conditions, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) confirmed. In response to his passing, the Government of India has declared seven days of national mourning to honor the life and legacy of the esteemed leader.
A notification from the Union Government also confirmed that a Cabinet meeting will take place today at 11:00 AM to discuss matters related to the late Prime Minister’s passing. Dr. Singh’s last rites will be performed with full state honours, the notification added.
Dr. Singh, widely credited as the architect of India’s economic reforms, served as India’s 14th Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. Prior to his tenure as Prime Minister, he held several important positions in the Government of India, including Finance Minister, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s liberalization policies in the 1990s.
His legacy as a statesman and economist has earned him respect across political divides. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and leaders from various political parties have expressed their grief and paid tribute to the late former leader, acknowledging his contributions to India’s growth on the global stage.
Dr. Singh is remembered as a man of intellect and integrity who led India through one of its most transformative periods in recent history.
