Kathmandu: Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel acknowledged challenges in meeting the revenue target for the current fiscal year despite some improvement over the previous year. Speaking at an event organized by the Department of Customs on International Customs Day, he urged customs and tax administration to enhance efficiency under growing pressure to achieve the annual revenue goals.

“Although there’s been a slight increase compared to last year, the collection is still below this year’s target. We must work diligently to meet the goals,” said Paudel. He highlighted recent government measures, including laws introduced via ordinance, to boost public service delivery, encourage private sector morale, and foster an investment-friendly environment.

The Finance Minister stressed the need for better coordination between customs offices and security agencies to strengthen revenue collection. “The government will assess your work based on results. Enhanced collaboration between security mechanisms and customs administration is vital,” he stated.

Revenue Secretary Dinesh Kumar Ghimire underlined the government’s commitment to modernizing customs operations through advanced technology. “We are exploring blockchain technology and integrated customs systems to streamline processes, minimize discretion, and improve efficiency,” he said.

Director General of the Customs Department, Harisharan Pudasaini, reaffirmed efforts to meet revenue targets and modernize customs administration. He emphasized adopting advanced technology to facilitate trade, reduce costs, and provide world-class services.

FNCCI President Chandra Prasad Dhakal and Nepal Chamber of Commerce President Kamlesh Kumar Agrawal advocated for reforms in customs procedures. They highlighted the need to simplify inspections, lower customs rates to combat smuggling, and align practices with international standards. Agrawal also recommended upgrading the HS Code to 10 digits and establishing quarantine labs at all customs offices.

On the occasion, the Customs Department launched a QR code-enabled notification system and EXIM code system, released souvenirs, and shared circulars. The event underscored the importance of collaboration between the government and private sector to streamline trade and bolster revenue collection.
