Durga Prasad Timsina released after spending 40 years in Indian jail

Kathmandu: Durga Prasad Timsina (Deepak) of Ilam, who has been lodged in an Indian jail for more than 40 years on a life sentence charge, has been released.

Timsina of Lumbak, Mai Municipality-10, was arrested in 1980 on charges of murdering a woman from Darjeeling. The allegations against him have not been substantiated. There is evidence that a case of murder has been registered with the Darjeeling police.

The Kolkata High Court had on Wednesday ordered his release. After his brother Prakash Chandra Timsina reached Kolkata from Nepal, he was released from Dumdum Prison in Kolkata today.

Durga Prasad was released under the guidance of his brother Prakash Chandra and Satish Thapa, the private secretary of the Nepali Consul General in Kolkata. Even though the case was registered, the police kept Durga Prasad Timsina in jail without a court hearing.
