Canada to cut international student permits by 45% in 2025

Kathmandu: Canada is set to implement a 45% reduction in permits granted to international students in 2025, following a significant 35% drop in student enrollment in 2024, when only 360,000 student visas were issued.

Officials cite rising concerns over the misuse of the student visa system, with reports indicating that some individuals are exploiting these permits for illegal activities. As a response, the Canadian government is tightening regulations to safeguard the integrity of its immigration policies.

The influx of international students has also placed increasing pressure on Canada’s housing and healthcare sectors. In light of these challenges, the government has decided to limit enrollment for the next two years, a move that will particularly affect students from Nepal, a country that sees hundreds of its citizens travel to Canada for higher education each year.

Additionally, Canada is set to impose stricter regulations on work permits for international students, further tightening the overall framework surrounding student immigration.
