Call for ban on luxury items at Everest Base Camp

Kathmandu: Stakeholders in Nepal are calling on the government to implement a ban on luxury items at Everest Base Camp, citing concerns over the environmental impact of rising comfort levels among climbers. During an event in Kathmandu on Monday, Himalayan tourism entrepreneur Dawa Tashi Sherpa highlighted the risks posed by the increasing use of luxury machinery, which he believes is often misattributed to climate change.

Sherpa stressed that the true threat to the mountains comes not from the growing number of climbers, but from the indulgence in luxury goods, which contribute to environmental degradation. He also warned against the narrative that the mountains cannot withstand climate change, urging a more responsible approach to mountaineering.

Climate expert Popular Gentle echoed the call for focused mountain conservation efforts, pointing out that international investment in the region remains limited due to a lack of priority. Meanwhile, former officials, including Pema Gyamtsho and Madhukumar Marasini, called for greater individual responsibility and investment in climate change mitigation, urging the government to develop a clearer strategy.
