Kathmandu: Dr. Bishwanath Poudel has been named the 18th Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank, ending months of uncertainty over the central bank’s leadership.
At a Tuesday evening Cabinet meeting, ministers approved Dr. Poudel’s appointment, a move that also helped defuse a brewing political crisis surrounding the governor’s post.
Earlier that day, a high‑level recommendation committee chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Poudel forwarded three candidates: Dr. Bishwanath Poudel, Acting Governor Nilam Dhungana, and former Secretary Dinesh Bhattarai. As Dr. Poudel topped the list, the Cabinet formally confirmed his nomination.
With Dr. Bishwanath Poudel assuming office, Nepal Rastra Bank looks set to regain stability and clear direction after an extended period of leadership uncertainty.
