PM Karki commits to holding elections within six months

Kathmandu: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has pledged to hand over power to a democratically elected government within the next six months.

Addressing heads of diplomatic missions and resident ambassadors at Singha Durbar on Friday, Prime Minister Karki said her administration’s main priority is to ensure fair, transparent, and peaceful elections.

“I have been entrusted with the responsibility of the prime minister not as a representative of any political party, but to safeguard the constitution and democracy,” she said. “My first priority is conducting fair elections.”

Karki informed that preparations for the polls are underway and that she has directed the Election Commission to ensure credibility and inclusivity in the process. She also revealed that the government is studying the feasibility of introducing an external voting system to enable Nepalis living abroad to cast their votes.

Emphasizing the importance of international monitoring, Karki said election observation would be key to maintaining transparency and public trust.

During the meeting, the prime minister also briefed diplomats on Nepal’s foreign policy priorities, regional relations, and internal initiatives.

She further informed that a judicial inquiry commission has been formed to investigate the recent violent incidents during the Gen Z movement, assuring that the probe will be fair and transparent. Preparations are also underway to initiate impartial investigations into corruption cases, she added.
