Kathmandu: A U.S. federal judge has temporarily blocked President Donald Trump’s attempt to freeze federal funding while his administration reviews spending for ideological alignment. The decision by U.S. District Judge Loren L. AliKhan came just minutes before the freeze was set to take effect, following a lawsuit by nonprofit groups that rely on federal money.
Trump’s order, which aimed to cut funding for programs supporting diversity, transgender rights, and climate policies, caused widespread confusion among states, schools, and organizations. Democrats condemned the move as unconstitutional, while 22 state attorneys general filed a lawsuit to block it permanently.
The administration insists the freeze is necessary to align spending with Trump’s executive orders. However, the lack of clear guidance has led to concerns over potential layoffs and service disruptions. A further court hearing is scheduled for Monday to determine the fate of the funding pause.
