Kathmandu: Anjila Tumbapo Subba, captain of the Nepalese national women’s football team, has expressed confidence in her team’s balanced and strong performance as they aim for victory in the upcoming SAFF Championship. This marks the third time Nepal is hosting the women’s SAFF Championship, set to kick off tomorrow on home turf.
Subba, who is also the team’s goalkeeper, emphasized that while all participating teams are vying for the title, she believes her squad stands out this year.
The opening match of the tournament will feature India facing Pakistan, while Nepal will begin its game against Bhutan on October 18. The championship will take place at the Dasarath Stadium in Tripureshwar, with seven countries—Nepal, Maldives, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, Bhutan, and Bangladesh—competing in total. The teams are divided into two groups: Nepal is in Group B alongside Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Bhutan, while Group A includes India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
Despite reaching the finals of the SAFF Women’s Championship five times, Nepal has yet to secure the title. India holds the record for the most successful team, having won the championship five times, while Bangladesh has claimed the title once.
