Kathmandu: Nepal Police reported on Tuesday morning that the death toll from the recent floods and landslides has reached 217, with 28 individuals still missing and 143 injured due to the severe weather that has persisted for three days.
Ministry of Home Affairs, noted that the disaster has inflicted significant damage to infrastructure, including the destruction of one and a half dozen bridges—ranging from concrete to Bailey and suspension types—and the closure of major highways connecting to Kathmandu.
So far, more than 4,500 disaster victims have been rescued. In a positive development, over 1,700 vehicles that were stranded on the Prithvi Highway due to a landslide at Jhyaple Khola in Dhading have been cleared to enter Kathmandu.
As preparations continue to allow vehicles to exit the Kathmandu Valley via the same route, Tiwari confirmed that the Ministry is collaborating with relevant agencies to restore roadways impacted by the flooding that occurred on September 26, 27, and 28.
In addition, rescue operations are underway for passengers stranded on the BP Highway in Kavrepalanchowk due to flooding from the Roshi River. A Nepali Army team has been dispatched to assist with these efforts using ropes and aerial support. The situation remains fluid as authorities work to mitigate the effects of the disaster.
