Nepal govt announces Rs 50,000 relief for temporary housing to aid disaster-affected families

Kathmandu: To aid disaster-affected families, the government has decided to provide Rs 50,000 each to those who have lost their homes due to natural calamities such as floods, landslides, and fires.

During a meeting held on Monday, the Disaster Management Executive Committee approved the new relief measure. Previously, financial assistance for temporary housing was only available to those affected by earthquakes. However, the committee’s decision broadens the scope to include victims of other natural disasters.

Anil Pokharel, Executive Head of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), confirmed that the relief amount will be disbursed in two installments. The policy shift comes after the 22nd Executive Committee meeting, held on May 3, 2024, initially approved the Temporary Housing Construction Subsidy Procedure 2081 BS. The implementation of this procedure had been delayed pending approval from the Ministry of Finance.

With the Finance Ministry’s green light, the Executive Committee’s recent decision ensures that affected individuals will receive financial support to help rebuild their temporary homes. Dr. Dijan Bhattarai, NDRRMA’s spokesperson, emphasized that this initiative will offer crucial support to families impacted by natural disasters.
