37 Nepalis deported from US arrive in Kathmandu

Kathmandu: A group of 37 Nepali nationals deported from the United States arrived in Kathmandu on Sunday via a chartered flight, according to immigration officials.

Anjan Neupane, spokesperson for the Immigration Office at Tribhuvan International Airport, confirmed that the group comprised 32 men and five women. The deportation was facilitated by the US government, which had informed Nepal’s diplomatic mission in Washington, D.C., about the return a week in advance.

Upon arrival, the deportees were handed over to the Human Trafficking Investigation Bureau of the Nepal Police for further screening and inquiry.

Authorities are investigating how the individuals reached the United States and whether they were victims of human trafficking. Officials said the bureau would launch a formal investigation if any of the returnees lodge complaints against suspected traffickers or agents.

The deportation is part of a broader crackdown on undocumented immigrants under US President Donald Trump’s administration, which began on January 20, 2025. According to officials, most of the deportees were found to have violated immigration laws, including illegal entry and visa overstays.

This latest deportation follows the removal of 140 Nepali nationals earlier this year under the same policy.
