Kathmandu: Police have confirmed that the decomposed body of an 11-year-old girl found in a water tank in Lalitpur was the result of a murder committed by her 15-year-old brother, driven by drug addiction.
The victim, Durga Bohara of Surma Rural Municipality-4, Bajhang, had been missing since March 17 (Chaitra 4). Her mother filed a missing person report two days later at the Lalitpur District Police Office. On April 11 (Chaitra 29), her body was discovered inside an unused cement water tank at a rented house in Khapinchhe, Lalitpur-9.
According to police, CCTV footage showed Durga and her brother entering their former residence together on the day she went missing. Based on this evidence, police arrested the boy from Mangalbazaar on April 14 (Baisakh 1). He later confessed to the crime.
Investigations revealed the siblings, both drug users, had gone to collect clothes from their old rented room and consumed drugs there. An argument over a candle escalated, leading the brother to physically assault Durga and strangle her with a nylon rope. He later hid her body in a water tank, sealed with a cement lid.
The body remained undiscovered for 25 days until the foul smell prompted a tenant to investigate and alert authorities. The Lalitpur District Police Office has initiated legal proceedings for further action against the accused.
