President Bhandari dissolves parliament; calls mid-term election

Kathmandu: On the recommendation of the cabinet, President Bidhya Devi Bhandari has dissolved the House of Representatives at midnight and announced mid-term elections. Elections for the House of Representatives will be held in two phases on November 12 and November 19.

Earlier, the cabinet meeting held at midnight had decided to recommend to the President to dissolve the House of Representatives and declare a mid-term election as per Article 76 (7) of the Constitution .

Article 76 (7) states that if the Prime Minister appointed in accordance with Clause (5) fails to get a vote of confidence or cannot be appointed as the Prime Minister, the President shall, on the recommendation of the Prime Minister, dissolve the House of Representatives and fix the date for the next House of Representatives election within six months.

Before dissolving the parliament, President Bhandari had rejected the claim made by Oli and Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba for the appointment of the prime minister.
